You gave a lovely talk about examples of sharing from your own life. You talked very much about the mundane side of living, sharing and being part of cities. This is so fundamentally important when we talk about cities. I’ve been at many conferences and events where people talk about cities and sometimes I wonder the last time that person actually was in a city, the last time they walked on the streets and in the back lanes and were part of the life in cities. Cities are buzzing, vibrant places, or we hope them to be. And for me, when you were talking, you made me think about the life of the city, and about two particular visions we have about the city: one of them is the smart city, the technological, the intelligent city, sharp and smooth and everything works. I’ve never seen one of those types of cities, but a lot of people have a visions of that city. The other city is the version that I think Harmen talked about: the vibrant, buzzing, full of people where sharing is merging into people’s lives and so on. And I don’t think that these visions are incompatible. I do think they can fit together, but I do think there are serious tensions between these visions and what we want going forward. I think we have to confront those tensions if we want to be living in prosperous, sustainable and lively cities.
You have an impressive track record.
